What is a Postpartum Doula?
A postpartum doula is a non-medical professional who is there to provide support and guidance in the delicate time after your baby is born. Postpartum doulas share unbiased, evidence-based information, and create safe spaces for you to feel comfortable and cared for.
The postpartum period can feel like a hazy, painful blur and mums can easily feel lost, overwhelmed or isolated. A doula can keep an eye on you, listening when you need to vent and watching for signs of postpartum depression and other adjustment issues. Whether you are expecting your first baby or you fifth, a postnatal doula can help you thrive, not simply survive, during those precious early days.
Benefits of hiring a doula include:
improved postpartum mental health
decreased anxiety
improved self confidence
improved bonding, attachment, and coping skills
Doulas will help ease your transition home by assisting with newborn care, allowing parents time to rest, doing light household chores such as laundry and vacuuming, light preparation and more.
Why Do I Need (and deserve) a Postpartum Doula?
Because we were never meant to do this alone, and regular support shouldn’t end the day you birth your baby.
As your postpartum doula, my focus is on you — because just as much as a baby needs unconditional love and support, so too do new parents. You are going to be the best parent for your baby if your needs are being met, and too often they fall by the wayside in the haze of constant feeding, sleep deprivation, and physical recovery.
A postpartum doula is great for:
new parents (but equally those expecting their 2nd, 3rd, 4th baby… because life is busier and yet the same challenges exist)
parents of multiples
parents who don’t have family or friends in town, or can't rely on them for practical and emotional support
anyone who wants to feel physically and emotionally supported and understood, fed nourishing food, and connected to quality support networks to facilitate an easier road into parenthood.
In an ideal world, everyone would have access to a postpartum doula.
